Bangkok Canal Tours: What a Longtail Ride Through Thonburi Is Really Like

Cross the Chao Phraya into Thonburi and Bangkok drops thirty years. The khlongs, the canal network the city was built on, still carry mail boats, monks and schoolchildren past teak stilt houses, and a longtail boat is the only way in. What to know before you board

Longtails are loud when the engine opens up on the river stretch and near-silent inside the canals, where the driver idles past the houses. Morning departures get the best light on Wat Arun and beat the afternoon rain in the green season. Bring a hat, and keep your camera ready at the locks where the boats queue: it is the best people-watching in Bangkok.
