Lunch came at the right time and there were enough choices for our mixed group. The driver was calm in traffic and the vehicle stayed cool all day. Even with weekend crowds, the route felt organised and never chaotic. I loved the tall prangs at Wat Phra Si Sanphet and the quiet corners behind the main path. Questions about Ayutthaya's history were answered with patience and a good sense of humour. There was time to look properly rather than snap one photo and leave. Pickup details were clear the evening before, so the early start was painless. A memorable and well-run escape from Bangkok. My parents enjoyed it too.

Good value for a full day, especially if you do not want to arrange trains and local transport yourself. The day matched the description and communication was reliable from start to finish. The van was comfortable, but Bangkok traffic stretched the return journey. The ruins were fascinating and the guide's timeline helped, though some dates became hard to follow. Very enjoyable for history lovers; my partner thought the temple stops became a little repetitive. Beautiful sites and good organisation, with a slightly early pickup for our hotel area. Dress-code advice was useful; carrying the extra cover in the humidity was less fun. I would still recommend it, especially outside the hottest months.

Cold water in the van and shaded breaks were small things that helped a lot in the heat. Our guide made the old capital easy to understand without turning the day into a lecture. Highly recommended for first-time visitors.

Our guide knew where to pause for photographs and where the group needed to keep moving. One of our favourite days in Thailand.

  1. 08:00

    Depart Bangkok

Set off from Bangkok by air-conditioned vehicle for the drive to Ayutthaya, the former capital of Siam. You can also join the tour at the first temple stop in Ayutthaya.

  2. Visit Wat Lokayasutha, known for its giant outdoor reclining Buddha laid out among the ruins of the old city.

  3. Continue to Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, part of the old royal palace complex and one of the most important temples in Ayutthaya. Its row of restored chedis is one of the city's best-known sights.

  4. Visit Wat Mahathat, famous for the stone Buddha head held within the roots of a Bodhi tree.

  5. Break for a buffet lunch at a local Thai restaurant. Your guide can point you toward the local specialties.

  6. Finish at the riverside Wat Chaiwattanaram, whose Khmer-style architecture was influenced by Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

River City Bangkok

Open in Google Maps

River City Bangkok is the riverside complex in Si Phraya, just off Charoen Krung Road; any taxi or Grab driver knows it by name. Coming by river, get off at Si Phraya pier next to the Royal Orchid Sheraton and walk a couple of minutes, and from BTS Saphan Taksin you can pick up the Chao Phraya Express boat at Sathorn pier. Please arrive by 07:45, 15 minutes before the 08:00 departure.

Departure is at 08:00 from River City Bangkok, with check-in from 07:45, or the van collects you first if you booked the hotel pickup option. Ayutthaya is about an hour and a half north depending on traffic, so the morning starts with a quiet stretch of motorway.

At the temples you are in and out of the van four times, walking each site with the guide. The grounds are old brick and uneven in places, which is why closed shoes are on the packing list, and shoulders and knees need to be covered: these are active religious sites, not just ruins.

Lunch is a buffet at a local Thai restaurant roughly midway through the day, with drinks paid separately. If you booked the English Tour Only option you follow the same day but cover your own entrance fees and lunch.

On the way back the tour drops hotel-pickup and city meeting point guests at MBK mall, an easy point to catch a taxi, the BTS or start an evening in the city.

FAQs

Hotel pickup from central Bangkok is a bookable option; otherwise you check in at River City Bangkok by 07:45 for the 08:00 departure. On the return leg, hotel pickup and city meeting point guests are dropped at MBK mall in central Bangkok.

You join the same tour, guide and transport, but entrance fees and the buffet lunch are not included in that option, so you pay those yourself on the day.

Shoulders and knees covered, for men and women, and comfortable closed shoes: the temple grounds are old brick and uneven in places. A hat and sunscreen help, since there is little shade between the ruins.

About an hour and a half each way from central Bangkok, depending on traffic, in an air-conditioned van or mini coach.

Yes, a buffet lunch at a local Thai restaurant, with the guide on hand to point out regional specialties. Drinks are at your own expense.

Yes. Cancelling or moving your booking to another date is free up to 24 hours before the tour starts, and anything you have paid is refunded in full. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the start time are non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded. If we have to cancel, for example for weather or safety, you can move to another date or take a full refund.

Our guide was kind, yet the group was too large to hear and we kept losing time regrouping. The temples were beautiful, but late pickup meant every stop felt hurried and lunch arrived cold. We left disappointed rather than tired in a good way.
