A lively, authentic-feeling experience. Our guide gave useful context, the captain navigated smoothly and the Big Buddha appeared at the perfect moment. We left with great photos and a better sense of Thonburi.

The guide found a quiet position for photos of the Buddha and waited until everyone had a clear shot. He also offered to take group pictures, then pointed out another angle as we moved deeper into the canal.

Silas loved it from start to finish. Fast enough to be exciting, calm enough to notice all the little details along the banks.

Very good tour. The stop could be ten minutes longer, especially for anyone wanting to explore the craft stalls.

River City Bangkok

Open in Google Maps

River City Bangkok is the riverside complex in Si Phraya, just off Charoen Krung Road; any taxi or Grab driver knows it by name. Coming by river, get off at Si Phraya pier next to the Royal Orchid Sheraton and walk a couple of minutes, and from BTS Saphan Taksin you can pick up the Chao Phraya Express boat at Sathorn pier. Meet at River City Bangkok and board the traditional longtail boat for the canal ride. Please arrive by 09:45, 15 minutes before the 10:00 departure.

Check-in is at River City Bangkok by 09:45 for the 10:00 departure, and the boat leaves from the pier right there. This is a boat trip from start to finish: you stay aboard for the full two hours, so it suits anyone who wants to see canal life without walking or cycling.

The first stretch crosses the open river, where the longtail engine makes itself heard, and then everything goes quiet as you turn into the Thonburi canals. Wat Arun and Wat Paknam pass by from the water, close enough for photos but without going ashore, and the guide talks you through the stilt houses and canal-side life as you go.

There is no food or drink included on this one, so have breakfast beforehand and bring a bottle of water, plus a hat and sunscreen for the open stretches.
